VIENNA, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria is in the process of developing BEACONSAT, its inaugural military satellite and the most substantial spacecraft it has built domestically so far. This satellite aims to identify and study disruptions impacting global navigation satellite systems, such as GPS and Galileo. Austria intends to launch BEACONSAT in February 2027 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, with a focus on detecting jamming and spoofing signals from orbit and collecting data on when and where navigation systems experience interference.

Serving as a technological demonstrator within a multi-year research initiative, BEACONSAT’s mission includes tackling radio interference known as jamming, which blocks or weakens satellite navigation signals, and spoofing, which sends false navigation data that can mislead receivers. Satellite navigation is crucial for aircraft, ships, vehicles, drones, emergency services, and other systems, and the Austrian Defence Ministry expects the project to generate data that will support operational decision-making and deepen understanding of GNSS interference issues.
GATE Space, based in Schwechat, heads the BEACONSAT project and holds overall responsibility for its execution. Established in 2022 as a spin-off from TU Wien, GATE Space specializes in chemical propulsion systems enabling satellites to maneuver in orbit. For this mission, the company supplies the propulsion system, satellite structure, and thermal management technology, having conducted over 8,000 hot-fire engine tests near Vienna Airport under both atmospheric and vacuum conditions.
Core Austrian technology powers satellite initiative
Several European firms contribute vital systems to Austria’s first military satellite, including Graz-based IGASPIN, which offers high-precision technology to detect and analyze GNSS interference, and Denmark’s Space Inventor, providing additional satellite components like the onboard computer. The project integrates commercial space hardware with systems developed specifically for the BEACONSAT demonstration. Austria’s Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure has also supported GATE Space with approximately 750,000 euros in funding through Austria Wirtschaftsservice.
The European Space Agency backs and co-funds the initiative through its ESA Marketplace program, which facilitates testing of commercial space technologies in security-related applications. Austrian officials describe BEACONSAT as a demonstrator rather than an operational satellite program. The project’s goal is to collect data on satellite navigation interference from orbit, which will inform Defence Ministry processes as Austria develops its military space capabilities.
Part of Austria’s expanding space efforts
Austria’s Defence Ministry is establishing a dedicated space services unit that will oversee satellite communications, satellite navigation, and satellite-based reconnaissance. BEACONSAT is a component of this broader structure, specifically focused on navigation interference. The ministry’s military space strategy aims for the Austrian Armed Forces to shift from merely using space services to operating space infrastructure and systems, a policy adopted in 2023 with plans extending through 2035 and beyond.
Scheduled for launch in February 2027 on a Falcon 9, BEACONSAT will deploy into orbit to conduct its research, gathering and analyzing GNSS interference data. The collaboration involves Austria’s Defence Ministry, GATE Space, and various European technology companies. This mission will mark Austria’s first military satellite launch and will test domestically developed systems for monitoring disruptions to GPS, Galileo, and other satellite navigation networks.
