Fletcher emphasized that the epidemic is progressing more rapidly than previous Ebola outbreaks and appealed to governments and donors to boost funding and facilitate humanitarian access. As of August 26, the agency reported 5,794 confirmed cases and 2,786 deaths in the DRC, with total cases crossing the 6,000 mark shortly thereafter. By that date, there were also 1,293 recoveries. Conflict and fragile health systems hinder Ebola mitigation
The Ebola crisis coincides with a broader humanitarian emergency in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Fletcher stated that nearly 11 million people require humanitarian aid due to ongoing conflict, displacement, food insecurity, and malnutrition. Violence in eastern parts of the country has restricted access for healthcare and relief personnel. The United Nations has expanded its response since activating an emergency mechanism on June 9, establishing operational hubs in Bunia and Beni to support field activities.
Medical workers on the frontlines face considerable risks during the outbreak response. Fletcher noted that over 40 healthcare workers have lost their lives to Ebola, and treatment centers and ambulances have been targeted with attacks. WHO data as of July 30 recorded 151 confirmed infections among health and care workers, including 44 fatalities. In response, health agencies are prioritizing infection prevention, safe clinical procedures, and enhanced protection for responders. WHO also highlighted that unknown transmission chains and deaths outside treatment facilities complicate efforts to contain the epidemic.
Funding increases and vaccine research amid rising cases
The updated 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan for the Democratic Republic of the Congo estimates a requirement of $2.1 billion, with $300 million allocated for Ebola-specific actions. Fletcher called for more flexible and increased international funding to support both the response and the broader humanitarian efforts. Meanwhile, WHO mentioned that a government-led six-month Ebola response plan needs $1.3 billion. The organization has urged member states to accelerate contributions as efforts expand to improve surveillance, treatment capacity, laboratory services, community outreach, and other public health initiatives.
On September 1, WHO also issued revised guidance on vaccines as researchers explore options against the Bundibugyo virus. The agency noted that current evidence is insufficient to determine if the licensed Ervebo vaccine offers meaningful protection against this Ebola species in humans. It recommended using the vaccine only within research protocols while clinical trials seek to generate additional data. WHO and Africa CDC continue supporting the Congolese government’s response, with ongoing efforts to identify cases, halt transmission, and safeguard communities across the six affected provinces.
